Bredesen fires back
By John Rodgers | Filed Under Phil Bredesen, State Legislature
“They can be critical all they want, but they’re not thinking about it.”
That was Gov. Phil Bredesen’s response today to a challenge from House Republican leaders to take a “defined stance” on the death penalty.
Recently, Bredesen has said that the state will likely not carry out any executions while the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing the constitutionality of the lethal injection process. He wants to let the Court act and then follow-up after it has delivered its opinion.
The GOP leaders said that was “unacceptable.”
“It appears the Governor wants to make sure that the criminals on Tennessee’s death row have another Merry Christmas, while the victims’ families suffer through another round of holidays without loved ones,” House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower (R-Bristol) stated.
House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada (R-College Grove) said the GOP will look to file legislation requiring a one-drug cocktail for implementing lethal injection.
Bredesen said a one-drug protocol, which federal judge Aleta Trauger backed in her condemnation of the state’s 3-drug process, is a “complete red herring.”

This is just another example of Republicans not reading and understanding the order issued by Judge Aleta Trauger. If the Republicans are going to submit legislation that does not fit with the orders of Judge Aleta Trauger I hope Governor Bredesen vetos their legislation and shows the GOP who is running this STATE.
