After pushing to make confidential, GOP requests gun records
By John Rodgers | Filed Under Jimmy Naifeh, State Legislature
The same day it criticized Democratic House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh for killing a bill making handgun carry permit holders’ records confidential, the Tennessee Republican Party requested those same records.
Today, the Tennessee GOP attacked Naifeh (D-Covington) for his actions earlier in the week to defeat the bill sealing gun permit holders’ records.
But on the same morning that the Tennessee Republican Party had advocated for the records to be sealed, the GOP’s spokesman, Bill Hobbs, filed a request with the Department of Safety requesting the list, confirmed Mike Browning, safety’s spokesman.
Contacted for reaction, Hobbs said the Tennessee GOP is “aware of the irony in our requesting a copy of public records that we thought should not be public.”
“However, we also believe Speaker Naifeh’s actions against the interest of law-abiding gun owners this week were so egregious as to deserve a thorough response through the campaign process,” Hobbs said in a statement. “We intend to find ways to give those 190,000 law-abiding gun owners across Tennessee a chance to have an impact.”
Tennessee Democrats took swift aim at Hobbs’ request, saying the GOP spokesman was “shooting blanks at Tennessee gun owners.”
“If the Tennessee Republican Party actually respected the privacy rights of Tennessee gun enthusiasts and sportsmen, why would they violate their privacy by sending a crass plea for political dollars?” said Wade Munday, spokesman for the Tennessee Democratic Party. “This is more than a brutal case of irony; this is the Tennessee Republican Party making Tennessee gun owner’s collateral damage as they invade their privacy.”
Today’s fallout came after Naifeh’s overt actions Wednesday to kill a bill making gun permit holders’ information confidential.

[...] least now it would appear we know why the TNGOP was making public records requests on gun owners while they were at the same time decrying such records being available to the general [...]
Gee, if Speaker Naifeh had supported making the records confidential, we wouldn’t have found out he lied about his permit. Too bad yo were found out to be a liar, Speaker Naifeh!
when will we get the necessary votes to get RID of Naifeh? he’s a menace to public trust and safety!
How can the TN Democrat party object to any request for these public records they fought so hard to keep available? Oh, the law of unintended consequences is real. The GOP recognizes that, too bad the Democrats don’t!
