After being called out this year by Gov. Phil Bredesen, House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh has asserted himself this legislative season in a very personal and in-your-face fashion.

Readers might recall Bredesen making some disparaging remarks to the Chattanooga Times-Free Press about Naifeh’s efforts to bring together AT&T and the cable television industry on the telephone giant’s would-be move into video service to Tennessee homes. Perhaps there is not direct cause and effect, but since then Naifeh has been personally dropping the hammer whenever something or someone gets out of line in the House.

He has made numerous power moves at the committee level, namely showing up and voting himself to tip the balance of power whenever he pleases. He has also stuck with the AT&T/Comcast negotiations, delivering a compromise bill personally from a podium at a General Assembly presser yesterday.

Maybe it was Bredesen’s apparent disdain for Naifeh’s efforts. Then again, maybe it is the fact that the Republican’s are breathing down the Democrats’ necks for the majority in the State House and Naifeh will lose two of his most politically able muscle men this summer in Rob Briley and Randy Rinks.

Either way, Naifeh, in one journalist’s opinion, is getting his hands dirty in the hand-to-hand combat of the General Assembly in a way he has not done in years. He cut a large, menacing profile at the presser yesterday. House Republicans, keep your heads down.

Are you aware that an ad-hoc group got together and kicked up a controversy by declaring former Tennessee State Legislature Speaker Nasty Jimmy “Boss Hogg” Naifeh a new position on the hill: ‘Speaker Emeritus’?!?

This position has no foundation in law or in our state constitution. That didn’t stop the suck-ups to the former speaker from posting an unofficial page to the official Tennessee Legislature Site.

    Here’s their official, unofficial page:
    http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/members/h81.html

So any yahoo can spin up and fling out a high falutin’ title if they want, eh? If that be the case, here’s my submission for the former speaker:

A little more true to life, eh?

Which page do you think will garner official approval first? (I may yet tinker and refine my entry to better its chances.)
