Bredesen says TN Dem candidates already distancing from Obama, Clinton
By John Rodgers | Filed Under Lincoln Davis, Phil Bredesen
In an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, Gov. Phil Bredesen said that Democratic candidates in Tennessee are already distancing themselves from either of the party’s potential presidential nominees – Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
“What scares me the most this year is that this is a tough election and McCain has enormous appeal,” he said. “It would be a tough race for either Democratic candidate in Tennessee. . . . That’s sobering to me.”
Another worrisome sign: Bredesen said some Democrats running for local and statewide office in Tennessee are now distancing themselves from both Obama and Clinton.
“One of the superdelegates said to me, ‘I’m in a swing district and both of them are poison to me,’ ” Bredesen said.
Scanning a list of Tennessee superdelegates, there appears likely only one in a “swing district” – Congressman Lincoln Davis (D-Pall Mall).
Davis’ spokesman, Tom Hayden, couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
Bredesen sounded the Democratic alarm for the party’s chances of winning in 2008, saying anyone who believes either Obama or Clinton would win in Tennessee versus McCain because President Bush’s unpopularity is “very naive.”
