Challenging Cooper

By John Rodgers | Filed Under State Legislature

If embattled Sen. Jerry Cooper (D-Morrison) decides to run again next year, he may face a formidable Republican opponent in state Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma).

Matheny is seriously considering running for the Senate District 14 seat, which stretches midway between Nashville and Chattanooga. He’ll make a decision in the next few months.

If he tosses the proverbial hat into the ring, Matheny will do so regardless of Cooper’s status.

Cooper, a member of the Senate since 1985, recently was acquitted on federal fraud charges but still faces DUI allegations.

If he runs, Cooper will be a tough one to beat in his district, but Matheny could be able to mount a serious charge in a year when Republicans will be on the offense for state Senate seats. That especially holds true if Fred Thompson is on the ballot.

Matheny has been a member of the state House since 2003 and has shown an ability to win in a district that is nowhere near a slam dunk for the GOP.

Judd Matheny is a huge improvement over Jerry Cooper. Most folks will be watching the lobbyists to see who’s putting their money on Cooper…and holding them accountable for furthering his embarrassing tenure.

We would all be lucky to have Judd Matheny representing us. I haven’t seen Jerry Cooper anywhere near my town in 5 years. He is too busy working the parties and the pork to bother with the locals.
