School board’s Johnson wins Chamber emerging leader award
By Amy Griffith | Filed Under Metro Schools
Board of Education member Karen Johnson is among the winners of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual young leader awards.
The second annual “NELAs” — Nashville Emerging Leader Awards — are given to professionals under the age of 40 who are leaders in 13 industry categories, including education.
Johnson works full-time for the state of Tennessee, as outreach director for the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. The description of Johnson in the Chamber’s announcement says Johnson is the youngest school board member and chair of the board’s advocacy committee, as well as her active involvement in the 100 Black Women Nashville Chapter and Society for Human Resources.
Johnson has made headlines with her support of the district’s recently passed rezoning plan, as well as with her efforts to advocate against overcrowding of Antioch schools.
Awards were announced at a ceremony last night. For more information about the NELAs and other winners, visit www.nashvillechamber.com.

It should have been a double award because she does whatever David Fox does.
Not true. Karen spoke against David Fox on the issue of appointed boards verses elected board. Get your facts straight. Go Ms. Johnson!
Yea. Right. She’s very independent,not.
As Karen’s mentor for 15 years and her
Nashville mother I have this to say:
Here you white people go again, selecting our leaders. She is not a leader selected by the Black Community and never will be. Karen plays by the rule of the white community and Fox and the white chamber.
But as I have told her, when white people use her up she will be thrown away like the rest of those Uncle and Aunts.
I fought for equal rights and justice all my life and she just doesn’t get it. A generation gap or just wanting to be one of them?
I await her rude awakening soon to come.
I know black leaders and Karen you are not one of them.
My fear is that she is being positioned to lead black people off of a cliff. I do not trust the motives of those who are pushing this re-segregation plan. Clearly, the intention is to leave many black kids behind – oftentimes with the assistance of white sanctioned black leaders. Even as we ponder these serious issues at the onset of a new school year, I was disheartened by ABC kids Saturday programming for young kids. While it is apparently not polite to directly address the issue of the pervasiveness of racism in America, and while anyone who does so is labled “divisive,” it seems perfectly acceptable for Corporate America to promote these deeply engrained views through other forms of mind controlling propaganda. I was appalled by The Replacements, aired on Saturday morning, August 09, 2008. It was an obvious attempt by racist writers, producers and programmers to propogandize even the children of America with comic depictions of Blacks as monkeys and apes. However clever, it was clear to me that the moral of the story applies to the 2008 presidential and other political races: Don’t affect change by replacing the white zookeeper with a black one. Instead, find a better way to contain the animals; while exploiting the monkeys as free labor. Attitudes in America haven’t improved, they’ve just become more discreet. And though opportunist have often compromised their own interests by burying their heads in the sand; many of them have emerged only to discover that they too have been entrapped by a cage.
Karen is the type of leader others should be. One who takes a principled stand no matter how much people try to tear you down. Karen you are phenomenal and don’t let anyone pull you down. If one person can anger people to say such ridiculous things, then there must be something that these other people are hiding. The board should be about all children and she clearly represents this new thinking. Go Karen!
Some people have so much investment in the past they can’t see the future looming ahead. I am so very proud of Karen and the many things she does to make S.E. Davidson County a wonderful place to live. Ask about her Safety Fair, her Easter Egg hunt that turned out 1,000 people and gave away 6 bicycles and 15,000 eggs to children and families who are learning to build a community together. Ask about her work with the S.E. Davidson cleanup day and her recent Chairing the S.E. Davidson Co. Health Fair. I am her neighbor and I can attest that all our neighbors know and love Karen. Our little corner of the world learned from MLK who taught us that we should be working together and judging people by the content of their character. Well, Karen has the character of a heroine. She has the courage to face down the naysayers and help the children in District Six irrespective of their skin color or parentage. You go Karen!!!!!!
“Karen is a dedicated public servant that always goes above and beyond to exercise her infinite resources to ignite a spirit of excellence in all her endeavors. She brings to the table unmatched confidence in the best of everyone she meets and works with. Where a lot of other public figures talk a good game, she demonstrates her worth through her unparalleled work ethic and superlative production. She’s not one with a fragile ego always looking for recognition of “little” accomplishments that are usually superficial and meaningless photo ops. She’s always “Karen” and knows how to stand for something, and is always open to hear all sides of any issue. She knows how to lead and is not afraid to go into the trenches to have a personal experience for her own reference and to set examples for others to follow. You’ll often hear a lot of soapbox chatter about what should/could and needs to be done. I advise you to look around and see who’s front and center “getting” the job done. She is a strong, intelligent, confident, educated woman who happens to be black-getting the job done for EVERYONE regardless of race, color, creed or socio-economic status. I invite you to meet and enjoy a LADY destined for history in our near future.”
